LAUT was commissioned by the city of Innsbruck to analyze the potential for local implementation of the superblock concept. Using urban morphological criteria, LAUT examined Innsbruck's urban fabric to identify areas with the greatest potential for conversion into superblocks and to determine the best candidates for superblock pilot projects.
This study demonstrates the significant potential for "superblocks" in Innsbruck and that their implementation could synergistically combine many of the city's urban development goals. The analysis of all potential areas provides a nuanced picture of the city-wide potential for the superblock concept. In consultation with the client, three potential project areas were identified for an initial pilot trial. The proposals for these pilot areas—detailed in accompanying profiles—provide a comprehensive basis for selecting a site for an Innsbruck superblock pilot project.
The results of the study led to the first Superblock pilot project in Innsbruck which started in 2026 in the pilot area of Dreiheiligen, identified by LAUT as one of the top three promising candidate areas.
The study has been published by the City of Innsbruck as pdf and geo-referenced shapefile.
