LAUT was commissioned by the City of Vienna’s Department for Urban Development and Planning (MA18) to bring about Vienna's first superblock pilot project – the Supergrätzl Favoriten.
After assisting with the initial site selection we conducted a social-spatial analysis. This provided the foundation for a superblock development concept comprising a traffic reorganization scheme, an open space concept, and a multi-phase implementation plan. To gain further insights into possible transition pathways, a pilot phase with preliminary traffic and open space design measures was prepared. This was designed to serve as backdrop for the participation process and to lay the groundwork for the subsequent long-term structural implementation of the superblock.
Following this preparatory work, LAUT coordinated the Supergrätzl Favoriten pilot phase in 2022, employing tactical means for a new traffic organization to prevent through-traffic. These measures were complemented by spatial interventions that promoted the emergence of new open space concepts and uses.
LAUT created the mobility design for colorful street markings and a preliminary open space design for urban greening and street furniture using inexpensively augmented readymades. In the center of the new superblock a pedestrian zone was established where LAUT installed a permanent project exhibition next to a large 1:50 scale plan of the neighborhood that served as a street-level planning tool, a spatial anchor point, and an informal playground.
To inform and consult stakeholders during the pilot phase, LAUT carried out a series of participation formats with an emphasis on public space: a street lab, an informational event, neighborhood walks, and a street festival. The results of this process were condensed into a report to help guide the next planning steps toward structural implementation.
